The OCCOA provides nutritious meals for older adults in congregate meal settings following the Operating Standards from the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging to help ensure that this valuable program is nutritionally sound, and available on a donation basis. The OCCOA hosts congregate meals at two meal sites. The Gaylord meal site is in the Alpine Alten Zimmer at 120 Grandview Blvd., and the Johannesburg meal site is in the Charleton Township Hall on Rowan St. in Johannesburg. Meal participants are asked to complete a short form and questionnaire so that they can be entered into the OCCOA’s database, which helps with tracking participation. The meals are open to all, and the charge for meal is as follows:
- Adults 60 and over – $3 Suggested Donation
- Under 60 – $4.50
- Carryout Meals – $6
Red Hen Soup & Sandwich Luncheons
Additionally, the OCCOA offers the Red Hen lunches on Tuesdays. The Red Hen lunch is a soup & sandwich lunch that is not part of the federal Older American Act program. The OCCOA kitchen staff use that opportunity to offer home-made soups, sandwiches, as well as salads and desserts. Participants can purchase “The Works” (soup of the day, sandwich, a small salad, dessert, and coffee, ice tea, or milk) or order a la carte. Meals may be taken “to go” (at no extra charge). Musical entertainment is provided by community volunteers when available.
- Adults 60 and over – $3.50 for “The Works”
- Under 60 – $5.00 for “The Works”
